The Semedica team recognizes the many challenges of bringing semantic innovations into existing workflows and organizations. Adding new technology is the easy part. The harder part is fitting the new idea into the existing processes, technologies, and work patterns. The Semedica team has more than 10 years of experience helping organizations realize the benefits of a semantic strategy while maintaining continuity in important business processes.

Getting Started

Slowly but surely, scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publishing is evolving primarily into an online information services model. Material that was once published on a periodic basis is now published and updated on a rolling basis. With the explosion of information available, clinicians and researchers spend more and more time searching—time that could be put to more effective use. We have moved from a world of information scarcity to a world of attention scarcity. Users expect to find information assets that better fit their needs.

The Semedica team understands the changing market for information services. It is experienced in the full range of work patterns for both print and online content management and production, as well as the business changes that drive these work patterns. As part of your selection of Cortex, Totem, Tagmaster or any of the Swiss Context Server applets, we delve into your business objectives in the context of your current and future customers. We use this as a basis from which to recommend the semantic strategies that are right for your business and to plan their implementation.

Training and Transition

You may elect to start with newly published material, and then apply a similar semantic strategy to prior publications. Semedica staff can assist in providing the semantic tagging services while your internal organization is getting training or otherwise adjusting to change. For example, our taxonomists can assist in building and managing the taxonomy that is right for your publication, then expand that to incorporate all of the publishing activities at an organization, including the annual meeting, guideline publication, and the publishing of reference works. Our indexers can be available if your organization experiences periodic upswings in the level of material coming in that needs to be tagged. We provide a complete training and transition plan to fit your needs.

Consulting

Organizations often go through more than one change at a time. Semedica can help identify the opportunities and pitfalls in creating an overall information architecture that includes automated indexing as well as human indexing. We can guide you through the changes taking place that impact the search and discovery experience for your users, and the expectation of users for materials that are tailored to their needs. The end goal of Semedica products is improved revenue generation and subscriber loyalty from a more compelling search and discovery experience and highly targeted educational, clinical, and training materials.
