SEMANTIC ENRICHMENT
At Silverchair, semantic technology is not a “bolt on” or afterthought: it is the foundation of the SCM6 platform and the product of 11 years of development. Every unit of content on the SCM6 platform is semantically enriched and normalized to Silverchair’s Cortex Taxonomy. This robust tagging schema drives the intelligent delivery of content across the platform: search, topic collections, related articles, reporting, ad targeting, personalized recommendations, and an array of widgets that surface content from external sources such as PubMed, GenBank, and ClinicalTrials.gov. SCM6’s semantic architecture enables a more flexible user interface, faster product development, and a superior user experience. Learn more >
PORTFOLIO INTEGRATION
Researchers, physicians, scholars, and other information professionals use a wide variety of formats: journals, books, guidelines, textbooks, reference works, CME/CE, multimedia, and more. These content formats seldom live in one place, even when published by the same organization, resulting in a less-than-ideal user experience. SCM6 allows publishers and other STM and scholarly information providers to bring together their content portfolio in one place by providing full support for all of the above formats. In addition to creating a better user experience, this portfolio integration, combined with Silverchair’s semantic architecture, provides the ideal environment for product development by allowing publishers to combine different formats into new products or to segment existing products in new ways.
SEMANTIC SEARCH
Relying solely on full-text for searching is problematic when it comes to STM and scholarly information resources. That is because authors often use different terms for the same concept. Moreover, with a full-text search, highly relevant related concepts will not appear. For these reasons, SCM6 includes Silverchair’s semantic search engine which uses a full-text search in tandem with relevancy rankings based on a normalized concept vocabulary and the nearly 300,000 equivalents found in our Cortex Taxonomy. Silverchair creates a “semantic summary” for each unit of content, which is then used, in conjunction with a full-text search algorithm, to return more accurate relevancy rankings. For example, a user who searches for “STEMI” may receive results that include terms such as “ST-segment myocardial infarction,” “ST elevation MI,” “acute myocardial infarction,” “AMI,” and “heart attack” among others.
INTEGRATED MOBILE CONTENT DELIVERY
Mobile delivery of STM and scholarly information is no longer optional. Every SCM6 deployment is mobile optimized to deliver high-value information into user workflows, such as point-of-care clinical settings. What is more, SCM6 provides users with an integrated mobile and desktop/laptop experience. A journal article or book chapter flagged while reading on a mobile device is presented to the user when next she signs in on her office or home computer. Personalization settings carry from the desktop to the mobile environment ensuring continuity of user experience. And mobile usage from institutional users is tied to the relevant institutional account. Learn more >
PERSONALIZATION
Today’s users expect online products to adapt to their preferences and information needs. They expect highly relevant content will find them. SCM6 delivers on this expectation. While users are able to create and save custom searches and manage alerts as on many other platforms, SCM6 goes further by recommending highly relevant content based on a given user’s interest. Additionally, users can customize the user interface with drag-and-drop widgets, access articles recently saved on their mobile device, and see what other users with similar interests are reading.
INTEGRATED MARKETING & ECOMMERCE
Putting the right offer in front of the right person at just the right time is the key to successful marketing. SCM6 enables your marketing professionals to create offers targeted to individuals based on a wide variety of criteria, including institutional affiliation, areas of specialization, areas of interest, geographic location, membership status, and more. A sophisticated reporting module helps you track the success of your marketing campaigns and an integrated ecommerce system provides seamless a seamless purchasing experience for end users.
SEMANTIC COLLECTIONS
Collections on SCM6 are powered by Silverchair’s Cortex Taxonomy, which enables the creation of topic collections on virtually any subject for which there is a sufficient content set. Silverchair will index content as it is loaded on SCM6, building an array of topic collections relevant to the product content set and user needs. In addition to automatically created collections, editors can create curated collections that highlight special topics or relationships. Collections can be built from different content sets (e.g. across multiple journals) and different format (e.g. book chapters and journal articles). Users can sign up for collection alerts that notify them when new content is added to a given collection. Additionally, SCM6 provides the ability to sell subscriptions or other access configurations to individual collections or groups of collections.
INTEGRATED SITE MANAGEMENT
SCM6’s SiteMaster module brings together all site administration into elegant interface: subscription management, reporting and analytics, access control management, site editing, content production, marketing, and ecommerce. Access rights to SiteMaster can be assigned to each functional area to ensure site security and data integrity. SiteMaster integrates seamlessly with existing customer/subscription management systems to ensure data integrity and ease of use.
SEMANTIC REPORTING
SCM6 supports the full array of reporting and analytics expected from today’s web platforms, including COUNTER-compliant reports, consortia reporting, content usage reports, feature usage reports, search reports, alert reports, and more. In addition to these standard reports, SCM6 provides reporting only possible with an integrated semantic architecture. These include reports on fastest-rising topics and most popular topics (normalized, over time) as well as reports that analyze content coverage gaps.
CONFIGURABLE WIDGETS
SCM6 employs a variety of widgets that publishers can deploy and configure as desired. Widgets are used to surface related content from other titles by the same publisher, to gather related content from external sources (e.g. PubMed or GenBank), to display job advertisements, to highlight most-read and most-cited articles, and much more. Nearly any XML feed or report can be turned into a widget. In addition, SCM6 provides the ability for end users to personalize their experience by configuring site widgets as desired and then saving their configuration settings.
TARGETED ADVERTISING
Online advertising is only as sophisticated as the data layer that supports it. SCM6 brings to bear the full power of its semantic data layer to support targeted advertisements. Ads can be targeted to individuals based on their interests, areas of specialization, geographic location, or institutional affiliations. SCM6 also supports content targeting – displaying an advertisement adjacent to highly relevant content. In addition to display ads, the same targeting criteria can be deployed to support classified (e.g. job) ads. For organizations with a job bank, SCM6 provides a powerful mechanism for reaching the passive job seeker by surfacing relevant job ads to qualified users that are not actively seeking, but may be interested in, new employment.
CUSTOMIZED, EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN
Not all information products are the same. They serve different audiences and different purposes. SCM6 brings a flexible approach to user interface along with over a decade of in-house experience and domain expertise. Our approach is rooted in evidence-based design and we work with our clients to develop user-tested applications that are proven to support their objectives and to deliver a superior user experience. Silverchair’s team of user experience (UX) designers are ready to make your iconic product just that: iconic.
CME/EDUCATION
Silverchair’s SCM6 platform includes support for support for both article-based CME as well as CME based on bespoke course modules or other content formats including book chapters or multimedia (e.g., a video of a lecture). For CME activities associated with an article or chapter, the quiz can be tightly integrated, appearing on an article/chapter tab. Users may track their activities and performance by topic and view their progress relative to the aggregated (and anonymized) responses of other users. Users can compare their responses to those of all other users, other users in their specialty, or other users at their institution.
MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT
Research and clinical information is often best conveyed by media other than text and images. SCM6 provides full support for video, audio, and interactive media. Given the proliferation of mobile devices, Silverchair has developed an integration with Brightcove that serves video files optimized for the user’s device—including iOS devices. Silverchair provides semantic enrichment of all multimedia files, ensuring they surface in relevant searches and site widgets and can be deployed in future product development.
