Sale of Silverchair Learning Systems Empowers Company’s Intensive Expansion of its STM Platform and Product Development Business
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, May 22, 2012 – Silverchair Holdings, Inc. (Silverchair) today announced the sale of Silverchair Learning Systems (SLS), the leading provider of online learning and information solutions for the senior care industry, to Vista Equity Partners (Vista), a private equity firm focused on investing in software and technology-enabled businesses. The transaction closed on May 4, 2012.
Proceeds of the divestiture will be used to fund growth opportunities for Silverchair’s principal business: Silverchair Information Systems (Silverchair), which provides advanced semantic product development solutions to scientific, technical, and medical (STM) publishers, professional societies, and the federal government. Unprecedented market demand for Silverchair’s new platform offering, SCM6, has created an opportunity to invest significant additional executive and financial resources in its groundbreaking technology. The divestiture of SLS will enable Silverchair to calibrate its vision and resources by accelerating technology investments, maximizing market opportunities, and building market share in the STM information and knowledge management space. Information industry analyst Outsell’s recent report on STM publishing platforms identifies the launch of SCM6 as one of the reasons behind the “significantly accelerating innovation and change for the STM publishing platform.”
“Today’s transaction is part of our long-term strategic plan to focus on Silverchair’s core competency of developing innovative technology platforms for STM publishers – a market we have successfully served for nearly 20 years,” said Thane Kerner, CEO of Silverchair Holdings. “This transaction will accelerate our development of the technologies that help make our publishing partners successful by both providing additional funding and by bringing a singular focus to our business.”
“We are deeply grateful for the great guidance and support we’ve received over the past 10 years as part of the Silverchair Holdings team,” said Mike Mutka, President and COO of Silverchair Learning Systems. “This transaction is a win for everyone, because it allows Silverchair Information Systems to focus on their exciting new market opportunities, while connecting us with a partner that is eager to invest aggressively in growing the SLS business. The JAMA Network Debuts on Silverchair’s SCM6 Platform
(Chicago, IL/ Charlottesville, VA) May 14, 2012 – The American Medical Association (AMA) today introduced the JAMA Network (www.jamanetwork.com) on SCM6, the natively semantic online hosting platform from Silverchair Information Systems (Silverchair). The JAMA Network brings together the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), along with the AMA’s nine Archives specialty journals and related resources, to create a new user-centered, semantically integrated digital portfolio.
“In creating the JAMA Network, our aspiration is to seamlessly integrate the wide array of knowledge we deliver into an intuitive, user-centric experience,” said Dr. Howard Bauchner, JAMA Editor in Chief. “Silverchair’s SCM6 technology allows us to create precise, dynamic relationships between articles, evidence, audio and video, teaching tools, and other highly relevant information resources. The JAMA Network on SCM6 is an environment that responds to each user’s needs with far more efficient knowledge discovery and presentation than has previously been possible.”
Features of the new JAMA Network include:
• User-centered design – Provides users with an intuitive interface and highlights key JAMA Network resources, including CME, Online First articles, and multimedia.
• Content in context – Surfaces additionally, highly relevant articles and other resources from across all the publications in the JAMA Network and beyond.
• Mobile optimization – The JAMA Network is optimized for reading on mobile devices.
• Semantic search – Provides better results by normalizing synonyms, alternate spellings, acronyms, and jargon and by connecting closely related concepts.
• Integrated e-commerce – New custom built JAMA Network store streamlines the purchase of subscriptions, CME, articles, and other resources.
• Integrated CME – Available directly on relevant articles as well as via a redeveloped CME section.
• Multimedia – Easy to locate multimedia landing page displayed across the JAMA Network combined with streaming videos viewable within the article environment.
• Semantic Collections – Users from all fields of medicine will find semantically generated topic collections that combine related content from across the Network.
“The JAMA Network grew out of our belief that the user – AMA members, non-member physicians around the world, medical students, other healthcare professionals, and patients and caregivers – should be at the center how we deliver information,” said Betsy Jones, JAMA’s Publisher. “We worked closely with Silverchair to develop a resource that would put the user first, using semantic technology to deliver dynamic content relationships, enable site personalization, and ultimately to put the right information in front of the right person at the right time in order to improve health outcomes.”
“Launching the JAMA Network on SCM6 is a galvanizing milestone for Silverchair,” said Silverchair CEO Thane Kerner. “Semantic technology is frankly a pretty wonky concept; it engenders a lot of theoretical discussion in the publishing community, and stimulates plenty of buzz-word compliant brochures. But the JAMA Network—which is built on the natively semantic SCM6—is a compelling real-world application of semantic theory. It’s not about getting data enriched or building triples. It’s about providing real value to users by leveraging those deep technologies to make information flow more precise and comprehensive.”

(Charlottesville, VA) January 18, 2012- Silverchair Information Systems will be awarded the 2012 Governor’s Award for Science Innovation tomorrow at the Science Museum of Virginia’s General Assembly Reception on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.

“We have been working vigorously to help our publisher clients embrace product development and innovation, and so it is a great honor for Silverchair to also be acknowledged for internal innovation,” said Silverchair CEO, Thane Kerner.
Silverchair Information Systems, founded in 1993 began as a small two person office that has grown to over 150 employees dedicated to delivering advanced semantic technologies, publishing platforms, and e-learning solutions to scientific, technical, and medical publishers, professional societies, and the federal government. In June 2011, Silverchair launched SCM6, the most substantial upgrade to its SCM web product development platform in company history. With that announcement, eight leading scientific societies simultaneously announced plans to migrate their digital publishing operations to, and develop new product lines on the new platform. Because SCM6 was built using a natively semantic architecture, these publishers have the capability to rapidly produce new product and features, embrace best-of-breed navigation, and receive support for myriad new business models to optimize their content portfolios. Since the release of SCM6, three additional STM publishers have decided to join the SCM6 platform.
With headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia, Silverchair was recently featured as a fast-growing Job Creator on the Governor’s website as the company continues to expand and bring innovation to the STM & scholarly publishing market.
